Quick Trip to Kansas City
By now, I'm a bit notorious (at least among my social media followers) for taking quick, in-and-out vacations. Up until recently, I think I would have said my craziest adventure was a two-day trip to California all the way from Kentucky (which I've now done twice). However, I think driving 8 hours through the night to Kansas City from Louisville might just take the cake.
See, I'm not a big fan of missing class (college is hard enough when you do go to class), and even if I did, it's nearly impossible to get a lot of time off from work, especially last minute. So when my favorite celebrity, Jennifer Morrison, announced she would be at a convention in Kansas City about a week before it was taking place, I knew I had to find a way to get there. So, my mother, who loves me more than anyone will ever know, drove 8 hours through the night to get me to Kansas City in time for the con. We stayed overnight, went to the con again the next day, and hopped back in the car immediately after. We spent almost as much time driving as we did in the actual state! And the drive from Louisville to Kansas City is a boring one. Essentially nothing but cornfields and farmland. However, we used the trip to check a few states off of our "to-visit" list. Not only did we drive through Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, we also made an effort to visit Kansas and Nebraska.
Obviously, 36 hours in a state didn't leave much time for sightseeing. We didn't even get around to visiting St. Louis and the Arch (although we did see it from the highway). We also did not try any authentic Kansas BBQ either. We were tired! Therefore, I don't have many tips for travelling, except to maybe not do what we did. That is: don't attempt to drive through the Midwest on a whim, don't pick a random town in Nebraska to drive to just to say you've been there, and probably eat somewhere besides the Burger Theory attached to your Holiday Inn. While we're on the topic though, Holiday Inns in general are underrated and amazing. Particularly, Holiday Inn Expresses.
It seems unfair for me to say the long, boring drive was worth it when I'm not the one who did the driving, but...it was totally worth it. I had never been to Kansas City before, much less Planet Comic Con, but the convention was amazing, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Planet Comic Con had amazing guests and fantastic vendors. Really though, any time I get to see Jennifer Morrison, I'm absolutely over-the-moon. People say not to meet your idols, but I've never had an interaction with Jennifer that wasn't incredibly positive and exciting. If you have the opportunity to attend Planet Comic Con, or any convention, I definitely recommend it.
A lot of people see conventions as a "nerdy" activity. And maybe, yeah, they are a bit nerdy. But they're also filled with kind, supportive, passionate fans who try their best to include everybody. Even when I went to a convention where I wasn't looking forward to seeing anyone in particular, I still ended up having a wonderful time!
